The type of carpet under a baseboard directly changes how you should protect and paint the baseboard edge.

Always work with the brush nearly dry, dragging excess back into the can between strokes, and keep a damp microfiber cloth handy to lift any small spots before they dry. Finally let the paint flash for a few minutes, then gently remove tape or guard toward the top of the baseboard to avoid pulling fibers.

Common mistakes start with heavy loaded brushes that cause drips into the carpet; use a light brush load and paint in thin coats instead. People often apply tape directly over long or looped fibers without tucking them, which lets paint wick under the tape; instead tuck and burnish or use a rigid guard. Another issue is removing tape too late and pulling dried paint chips onto the carpet; remove tape while paint is still tacky or wait until fully dry then cut along the edge with a sharp utility knife to separate paint cleanly.
