TwistAndSeal Flange Raise Guide For Tile-Over Toilets

When a renovation raises the finished floor more than the original toilet flange, you must adapt the flange and seal to maintain a watertight, stable connection.

Start by measuring the vertical gap between the finished floor surface and the top of the existing flange. If the gap is small, under three quarters of an inch, a flange extender ring or stacked polymer spacer can work; center the spacer over the flange, compress it slightly, and fasten with corrosion resistant screws through existing flange holes. For larger gaps up to two and a half inches, a twist and seal style flange that telescopes or stacks is a reliable option because it clamps to the waste pipe and raises the flange surface in one piece; follow the manufacturer torque and cut-to-length instructions and use the provided gasket. When using any new flange, secure it to the subfloor or blocking beneath the finished floor where possible, not only to the old flange, to prevent movement. Select a wax ring or wax-free gasket designed for the final flange height; for raised flanges you may need an extra-thick wax ring or a wax ring with a flange to reach the waste opening without compression failure. After installing, tighten bolts evenly, rotate the bowl slightly to seat the ring, and test by pouring water into the bowl and checking the closet flange joint and the base for leaks before sealing the toilet base with caulk.

Common mistakes are relying on the old flange as the only anchor which allows wobble and leaks, using a standard thin wax ring when the flange is raised, and failing to test the seal before final caulking. Anchor the new flange assembly to solid blocking or the subfloor so the toilet load does not stress the pipe connection. Use a wax ring sized for the final flange height or a wax-free mechanical seal when height or pipe alignment is unusual. Always test for leaks with water and observe both the waste joint and the toilet base before applying finish caulk.
