Two-Layer Bubble Wrap Dish Barrel Packing Guide

Pack fragile items for a move by planning layers, using the right containers, and packing with intention to prevent breakage.

Start by gathering quality materials: dish barrels or rigid corrugated boxes sized for dishes, multiple layers of bubble wrap, packing paper, packing tape, and labels. Wrap each fragile item individually with at least two layers of bubble wrap for glass and ceramic, and use packing paper as a final cushioning wrap to prevent surface abrasion. Pack plates vertically like records, not flat, placing a felt or twisted paper pad between each plate and filling the box edges with crumpled paper so there is no movement. For stemware and glasses use dish barrel partitions or make tight compartments with rolled paper; stemware should be placed upright if space allows and cushioned at the stem and base. For artwork and mirrors use corner protectors, foam board, and consider a professional crate for anything irreplaceable or large; secure the crate interior so the piece does not touch the outer walls. Seal boxes with quality tape, label them clearly as fragile, and write which side is up so handlers can orient them correctly during loading and unloading.

People often underpack by using single layer wraps and leaving voids that allow items to shift during transit, so always overfill with crumpled paper until the item is immobile. Another common issue is stacking heavy boxes on top of fragile boxes; mark sides and place fragile boxes on top of stable stacks or transport them in the car if possible. Finally, some movers do not handle unmarked boxes carefully because they do not know which boxes contain breakables; use bold fragile labels and a colored sticker system so handlers can quickly identify priority boxes.
