Check for a proper seal by lowering the toilet slowly onto the wax ring and feeling for steady resistance as the bowl makes contact with the flange.
Start by aligning the toilet horn over the flange with the bolts exposed and the wax ring centered. Lift the bowl straight up a few inches then set it down slowly and evenly so the wax compresses uniformly; a quick drop can shear the ring or create an uneven seal. As the bowl approaches the flange, place your hands on either side near the base and apply gentle, steady downward pressure until the skirt contacts the floor, feeling for a firm, continuous resistance rather than a sudden stop or a loose, spongy give. If you do not feel that steady resistance you should lift the bowl slightly, re-center the wax ring, and try again; misalignment or an off-center wax ring is the most common cause of a weak feel. After seating, rock the toilet gently to confirm it does not shift; small movement indicates the wax did not compress properly and you must reseat the bowl with a fresh wax ring. Finally, tighten the nuts alternately and evenly to the manufacturer recommended snugness while checking that the resistance stays consistent and the bowl remains level.
A frequent mistake is dropping the bowl quickly which can tear or displace the wax ring so always lower slowly and control the motion by hand and if damaged replace the ring immediately. Another common issue is using an older or deformed wax ring that no longer compresses; replace it with a new ring sized for your flange height so you get the proper resistance on seating. People also overtighten the mounting bolts which can crack the porcelain and give a false sense of seal; tighten evenly until snug and use shims under the base for level, not brute force.
