Prepare the crack so repair material bonds firmly and lasts.
Start by widening the crack slightly with an old flathead screwdriver or cold chisel to remove undercut edges and loose material; you want a clean vertical face so the patch can adhere. Use a nylon cup brush mounted on a cordless drill to scrub both edges and the inside of the crack until you see solid, unweathered concrete. Vacuum all remaining debris with a Shop Vac or Dyson using a narrow crevice tool to reach deep pockets, then follow with a leaf blower to remove fine dust from the surface and adjacent areas. If the crack is damp, allow it to dry for at least twenty four hours or speed drying with a fan so the repair compound will not trap moisture. For hairline cracks below one quarter inch wide, apply a liquid concrete bonding agent before filler to improve adhesion. For wider cracks, pack a backer rod to control filler depth before tooling the surface smooth to match the driveway plane.
Common mistakes start with inadequate cleaning which leaves dust that prevents bonding, so spend the time to brush, vacuum, and blow until the substrate looks uniformly clean. Another is repairing a wet crack which traps moisture and leads to premature failure, so wait for full drying or use gentle heat and fans to remove moisture first. A third mistake is overfilling without using a backer rod in wide gaps which causes the filler to flex and crack; insert a foam backer rod to set correct depth and then apply the repair material in layers, compacting each layer slightly for best results.
