ZincRich Primer Method For Gate Rustproofing

Protect metal gates and automation by treating rust and mill scale before painting to ensure long term protection during exterior house painting.

Start by removing loose rust and mill scale with a wire brush for small areas or a powered rotary wire wheel for larger surfaces until you reach bright metal. For stubborn corrosion use a chemical rust converter only on thin, tightly adherent rust and then neutralize and rinse as directed; do not rely on converters for heavy flaking metal. Degrease the surface with a solvent like mineral spirits, then lightly abrade with sixty to eighty grit sandpaper or a scotch brite pad to create a profile for primer adhesion. Apply a zinc rich primer for bare steel if you need sacrificial protection, or use a high build epoxy primer when you want strong adhesion and barrier protection; both must be applied to the manufacturer drying times and recoat windows. For the topcoat choose an exterior acrylic enamel for easy maintenance and ultraviolet resistance or a polyurethane enamel for higher chemical and abrasion resistance; multiple thin coats are better than one thick coat. Inspect hinges, latches, and automation housings and mask or remove components as needed, and where dissimilar metals meet install insulating washers or use galvanic isolation techniques to prevent accelerated corrosion.

Common mistakes start with incomplete rust removal which traps active corrosion beneath coatings, so always remove loose scale and feather edges to solid metal before priming. Second is using incompatible primers and topcoats which leads to blisters and flaking; check product data sheets and stick with primer and topcoat systems rated for metal exterior use. Third is painting over moving parts and electrical components without proper masking which causes mechanical binding and motor failure; remove or mask electronics, lubricate pivot points after painting, and confirm paint compatibility with the motor housing materials.
